This Chart shows the relative probability of a hurricane or tropical storm being present in the Caribbean Sea / Gulf of Mexico / Bahamas area during the various months of the year:

Frequency of Storms & Hurricanes in the Caribbean

Of course, the Chart is not the end of the story. Even a large hurricane or storm will affect only a small portion of the total area under consideration and may well have no impact at all at your location. For example, a Caribbean storm having an impact out to a distance of 100 miles from its center is affecting an area of roughly 30,000 square miles. The Caribbean Sea alone is about 1,000,000 square miles, so this hypothetical storm is affecting only 3% of the Caribbean.
